Born William Lemuel Boyd (Bill Boyd) on September 29, 1910, Bill Boyd was a successful early Western Swing bandleader, singer and guitarist. For true fans of Western Swing music, Bill Boyd rates with his contemporary, Bob Wills, even though the two utilized very different styles; whereas Wills & his Texas Playboys often used horns, electric steel & lead guitars and recorded songs from a fusion of different genres, Boyd remained true to his western roots, using only an acoustic string band with his Cowboy Ramblers.

The Influential Bob Wills could have put down his bow and never picked up his fiddle again back in the day when Pappy O'Daniel was leveraging his power to get radio station after radio station to drop Wills...

Bob could have given it all up and gone back to Turkey, Texas and started farming, barbering, or preaching again - but he didn't. And that made all the difference.

Today, if you visit the Tulsa cemetery, upon Bob's headstone you'll read the words "Deep within my heart lies a melody," and no doubt, that was true. But, Bob Wills left a melody in so many other hearts and influenced the music world around him - a ripple effect of which we still feel the effects of today through the music of the King of Rock and Roll to the music of the King, himself, Mr. George Strait.

Celebrating this history and the musical roots of western swing is what sets the Cowtown Birthplace of Western Swing Festival apart. Our founder, Michael Markwardt has created an award-winning documentary film, "The Birth and History of Western Swing," that takes you back to the very beginnings of the genre and you can almost ride along with Bob and Milton Brown and the Light Crust Doughboys.

Today, we're remembering Louise Rowe!
Louise Rowe was always the odd one out in the Texas Playboys' band photos: nine musicians, all wearing cowboy boots and royal-blue outfits from Nudie's of Hollywood, and Louise is the only one in a dress. Rowe was the only female musician in the history of Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys, hitting the road in 1953 and earning a place in Texas music history.
